Fact: The average business has $60,000 worth of computer data and many of them have little or no protection at all.

Fact: It does not take a dramatic natural disaster to make you lose your data.  Every day viruses, worms, hard drive crashes, software failures, and theft turn businesses upside down in an effort to recover information and resume operations.

Fact: The average PC data loss can cost more than $2,000 when you consider technical support for recovery, lost productivity, and lost data.

Cost Benefit Analysis of In-House Backups vs. secure, offsite and automatic Flickertronics' Remote Backup Service

Copying data to CDs/DVDs or tapes that are left on premises only insures that some data will be available for restore if the backup media is accessible after a data loss event – and if this data is taken offsite it is usually unencrypted, making it available for viewing and use by virtually anyone that might come into contact with it. Fires usually destroy backup media that are left onsite, and in many cases the affected premises are off-limits to everyone for many days after a fire or other disaster. Proper backups are done automatically, at non-peak business hours, are securely encrypted, are available for restore at any time, and are taken offsite – every night.

Costs for proper in-house backup include:

  • Employee time - backing up: (daily) ½ - 1 hour
  • Backup Media: $2 - $200 – depending on format
  • Hardware: $200 to $8000 depending on format
  • Employee time - verifying backups: (weekly) 1 hour
  • Employee time – swapping media: (daily) .25 hours+

Assuming that the employee responsible for the backups, removal of media, verifications and restore processes is on a salary of at least $30,000 per year, and using the minimum time dedications outlined above, the cost of properly backing up an SMBs data is about $71.25 per week, $285 per month, and $3420 per year – not including hardware. If you factor in the cost of true manual ‘rotation’ of backup copies to a secure offsite location using a courier service ($300 per month+) and the aggregate costs associated with restoring data from tapes or the internal costs of managing a single total loss/restore event, the costs of in-house backup can skyrocket to well over double the previous estimate.

Compare this to FlickerTel Inc.'s Remote Backup Service, operating automatically at non-peak hours, and without imposing on your existing staff or adding hardware or media resources of any type. Typical average charges for FlickerTel Inc. Remote Backup Service service might be $50-$75 per month, resulting in a minimum cost savings of between $2520 and $2820 per year.

Our software is provided by Remote Backup Systems. Inc., who invented the Online Backup industry when they coined the now-popular term, "Remote Backup" in 1987. They wrote the very first public White Paper on the topic, defining the basic protocol used by virtually all online backup software today. In 1989 they released the very first commercial remote backup software, which has been under continuous development and for sale since then.

They performed the very first Remote Backup over telephone lines and modems in the mid-eighties, the very first wireless remote backup, the very first satellite remote backup, the first remote backup from an airplane, a sailboat, a cell phone, and an erupting volcano. Just to prove they can do anything, the geeks in their lab even did a backup over tin-cans and a string using modified 110 baud telephone modems and custom-built microphones.

Other milestones for Remote Backup Systems. Inc.

  • 1987 - First Commercial Remote Backup. The first commercial remote backup backed up a departmental database of a local hospital to the RBS Development Lab in Memphis. The very first disaster recovery successfully restored the department's entire database the day after a lightning strike destroyed its Server.
  •

  • 1993 - First Internet Remote Backup and Restore. RBS completed the very first remote backup over the brand new "Internet" from Chicago through Atlanta to Memphis.

  • 2004 - World's LONGEST Remote Backup and Restore - 88,964 Miles using a backup satellite ground station and the standard commercial Remote Backup product, RBackup, RBS successfully completed an 88,964-mile backup and restore that used two round-trip hops from Memphis to the G4R satellite orbiting 22,241 miles overhead.

  • The point is this - they've been around far longer than anyone else, they've done far more remote backups than anyone else, and they have more industry knowledge than anyone else.

Remote Backup is the latest in a family of software and services that founded and defined the Remote Backup industry for microcomputers in 1987. It encrypts your data then automatically backs up your critical, encrypted computer files to our secure, off-site locations, giving you the confidence and security big companies have enjoyed for decades.
